Outdoor Excursions
Explore on your own!
Telluride Sleighs and Wagons offers horse-drawn sleigh rides through the scenic Aldasoro Ranch in Telluride, CO. Run by descendants of local sheep ranchers, their tours blend rustic charm with history. Guests can enjoy local hospitality and Basque-inspired meals during private dinner rides or sunset wagon tours, depending on the season.
Head to the Madeline Hotel & Residences in Mountain Village, which has a scenic outdoor ice rink. The rink offers open skate sessions, rentals, and occasional events, making it an enjoyable activity for visitors.
Firecracker Hill in Telluride Town Park is a local favorite for sledding. For a more thrilling experience, book a snowmobile tour that takes you through backcountry trails, providing views of the surrounding mountains
Take a scenic gondola ride offering breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains. This free ride connects Telluride with Mountain Village and operates until midnight, providing both daytime panoramas and nighttime stargazing opportunities.
After a day of winter activities, relax at the Orvis or Ouray Outdoor Hot Springs, both located within driving distance of Ridgway. Soaking in these natural hot springs is a perfect way to ease sore muscles.
Stop by the Telluride Brewing Company to sample award-winning craft beers such as the Face Down Brown and Whacked Out Wheat. It’s a great way to unwind after outdoor adventures and enjoy some local flavors.
What to Wear
- Absorbent socks in wool or other material—not cotton. Do not wear two pairs of socks, as they may bunch up in your boots and cause your feet to hurt.
- Insulated, water-resistant gloves or mittens should always be worn, even on warmer days. Avoid wearing knit gloves or mittens as they will get wet.
- A warm hat, or even better, a helmet. A helmet will keep your head warm and protect you. Helmets are available for rent if you do not own one.
- A water-resistant jacket with a high collar.
- Water-resistant ski pants or snow bibs to stay warm and dry.
- Goggles or sunglasses – at high elevations, the sun is extremely strong, and its reflection off the snow can damage your eyes. Protect them with a good pair of goggles and sunglasses.
